Fisherman's Favorite Planter

This attractive pot is a combination of our favorite fishing quotes that we just know Dad will love and some great fish images. We used several of our favorite quotes, but you can use your favorites, or check out a wide sample of fishing quotes here. We also used rub on designs for our fishy images because they were quick and worked great. Hand drawn fish, fishing poles, worms, lures, and other items are even cuter, and images from photos, magazines, and catalogs can also be decoupaged onto the pot if desired.

6 inch terracotta pot

Pale tan acrylic paint

Dark green acrylic paint

Copper metallic paint pen

Fishing themed rub on images

Varnish or acrylic sealer (optional)

Fisherman's Favorite PlanterCover your work surface with newspapers. Paint the bottom of the pot with a coat of the tan paint and let dry for at least an hour, or as directed by the manufacturer. Repeat with a second coat of tan paint once dry. Paint the rim of the pot with a coat of the green paint and let dry for at least an hour, or as directed by the manufacturer. Repeat with a second coat of the green paint once dry. Let dry thoroughly. Take the copper paint pen and make a 1/8 inch border below the rim of the pot, covering the area where the green and tan paint meet. Add your fishy quotes to the pot, adding at least one quote around the rim in big letters and scattering a few smaller quotes around the pot. The quotes we used were:

  • Even a bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work

  • Work is for people who don't know how to fish.

  • All men are equal before fish. ~ Herbert Hoover

Let the paint dry thoroughly. Add a few of the fishy rub on images as directed by the manufacturer. If desired, finish with a varnish or acrylic sealer according to the package directions. Sealing the pot is especially important if your Dad might use this as an outdoor planter. Make sure the pot has thoroughly dried before adding a plant or wrapping for Dad.
