Afikomen Holder

This elegant Afikomen holder makes a beautiful addition to any Seder table. We chose materials that matched our traditional Passover tablecloth, but any colors that match your décor can be used. Children especially look forward to the hiding of the Afikomen, and having them be involved in creating the holder makes them look forward to it even more. This makes for a great first project for younger children, but an even easier project for very young children would be to make a similar holder using colorful felt and craft glue using the dimensions and instructions below.

13" by 16" piece of satin
Pins
Silk thread
Scissors
Embroidery needle
100 10/0 gold seed beads
50 10/0 crystal seed beads
50 2.5 mm pearls

Afikomen HolderPlace the fabric on a clean, flat work surface. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the wrong side of the fabric facing outwards. Slide the fabric two inches downward to form a side that is 7 inches long and a side that is 9 inches long (the extra two inches will form the flap to hold the Afikomen in the holder). Pin the satin together to form a pouch, with a 1/2 inch hem, by pinning the 7 inch long fabric to the 9 inch long fabric along the sides. Fold the top and sides of the two inch flap to form a 1/2 inch hem, and pin, folding the corners so they lay flat. Cut a length of the silk thread and thread the needle. Make a small knot in one end of the thread. Starting at the base of the holder, sew up the side of the satin, making a 1/2 inch wide hem combining the 7 inch and 9 inch lengths. Repeat with the other side, using additional thread as needed. To finish the flap and add the decorative beading, start at the end of the 7 inch piece of fabric. Knot the thread and sew from the inside of the fabric to the outside. Thread a gold bead onto the needle and sew from the outside of the fabric to the inside with a very small stitch. Repeat, alternating between a gold bead and a crystal bead, then a gold bead and a pearl, and then repeat the pattern. Stitch and bead around the entire flap, making sure to tightly sew down the corners, until the top of the 7 inch fabric is reached on the other side. Tie your knot tightly and cut off any remaining thread. Turn the bag inside out and press the corners out carefully to form the rectangular holder. Use for storing and hiding the Afikomen.
